The Castle Roared: Nashville SC Dominates and Defeats Minnesota United

Sam Surridge returned with a brace and Espinoza shone on a night where the BJGrit knew no limits

Nashville SC 3 – 1 Minnesota United

NASHVILLE, TN — Geodis Park dressed up for the occasion on Sunday night. In front of 24,387 fans packed into The Castle, Nashville SC delivered their best performance of the season to convincingly defeat Minnesota United in a clash between two unbeaten sides in the MLS Eastern Conference. The final score, 3-1, does not fully capture the dominance the home side displayed throughout the match.

First Half: The Law of the BJGrit

From the opening whistle, Nashville set the tone. The high press and long possession sequences — the hallmarks of what Nashville Total Sports calls the BJGrit philosophy under head coach B.J. Callaghan — were on full display from the start. Within the first eight minutes, two corner kicks and firm control of the midfield made it clear what kind of night lay ahead.

Andy Najar bursts down the right flank, unstoppable in his lane.

Minute 11 brought the first real chance. Hany Mukhtar, Nashville’s creative engine, delivered a brilliant through ball to Cristian Espinoza, but the Argentine was unable to either shoot or cross, squandering a golden opportunity. The machine was still warming up.

Minute 18 showcased NSC’s depth of attacking talent. Eddi Tagseth rattled the post with a spectacular effort, and the rebound fell to Mukhtar, who managed to tee up Sam Surridge to tap in. VAR, however, ruled the goal out for offside. It was only a matter of time.

The opener arrived in minute 26. Another lengthy Nashville possession ended with Patrick Yazbek driving a shot inside the box. Sam Surridge was in exactly the right place to bundle the ball home. Doubts over his positioning before the finish were quickly dispelled by VAR: it was a legal goal. The Castle trembled from its foundations for the first time on a rainy Nashville night.

Sam Surridge, inevitable. The English striker finds the back of the net once again at Geodis Park.

The second goal arrived in minute 33 and was pure philosophy. Nashville’s high press forced an error in Minnesota’s buildup. Mukhtar pounced with a ferocious shot that Drake Callender could not hold. Cristian Espinoza, always in the right place at the right time, finished the rebound with a powerful right-footed strike. The walls of The Castle shook with the fury of its people.

Maxwell Woledzi raises his arms to the Geodis Park sky to celebrate Nashville SC’s goal.

But Minnesota United refused to go quietly before the break. In minute 35, Australian midfielder Nectarios Triantis produced the individual moment of the night: he drove at the Nashville defense, cut into the box and unleashed an unstoppable effort that found the top right corner of Brian Schwake’s net. A stunning goal that gave the visitors renewed hope. It was 2-1 at halftime after a breathtaking first half.

Second Half: Surridge Closes the Case

Nashville wasted no time putting the game to bed. Just two minutes after the restart, in the 47th minute, Sam Surridge completed his brace. The move was a collective poem: a flowing combination down the right flank between Espinoza and the young Patrick Yazbek, who showed composure and vision to set up the English striker inside the box. Surridge finished with a high, powerful drive that Callender had no answer for. The match was effectively over at 3-1.

Man of the match. Sam Surridge holds possession with confidence under pressure from Devin Padelford.

Minnesota kept pushing. In minute 54, Jefferson Diaz tested Schwake with a fierce effort from the edge of the area, only for the Nashville goalkeeper to tip it over the bar with sharp reflexes. Four minutes later, it was Espinoza again who threatened: receiving from Mukhtar, he shaped up and fired hard from just outside the box, forcing another save from Callender.

James Rodríguez, Minnesota United’s high-profile new signing, watches the match closely from the stands at Geodis Park.

The final twenty minutes were a study in game management and growing frustration. Nashville controlled proceedings with the assurance of a team that knows the job is done, while Minnesota United repeatedly ran into a disciplined and well-organized defensive structure. The scoreline did not change. The final whistle confirmed what everyone inside the stadium already knew: The Castle had once again proven impenetrable.

Daniel Lovitz rises above everyone to contest the aerial ball as players from both sides look on.

Players of the Match

Sam Surridge was the undisputed standout. The English striker, who had missed Nashville’s previous match, returned in the best possible fashion with two goals and a dominant display in the box. Patrick Yazbek continued his rise as one of the team’s most complete midfielders, contributing two assists and a tireless energy that is becoming his trademark. Cristian Espinoza, with his movement and decision-making in the final third, was Surridge’s perfect partner. And behind it all, Hany Mukhtar conducted the orchestra with authority and intelligence.

Hany Mukhtar, as if time belongs to him, pauses the action and dictates the tempo of the game against Minnesota United.

Head coach B.J. Callaghan was full of praise for Espinoza and came to the Argentine’s defense following his public self-criticism after the draw in Dallas:

HEAD COACH B.J. CALLAGHAN

(On Cristian Espinoza’s recent performances and first Nashville SC goal)

«I mean, listen, I think it’s a credit to his leadership and his humility to say that, but I don’t agree with it. We’re going to win, we’re going to lose, or we’re going to draw as a team always, and we have the utmost confidence. And I said it after that game, and I continue to say here, if we continue to get our guys in good goal scoring chances, we’ll continue to score goals.»

Cristian Espinoza shows off his silky dribbling skills with the ball glued to his foot past Wil Trapp.

Midfielder Patrick Yazbek, the author of two assists on the night, spoke with the maturity of a player who fully understands his role within the system:

MIDFIELDER PATRICK YAZBEK

(On the team’s offensive performance this season)

«Yeah, I think obviously, coming off the back of last year, you saw the impact that Sam and Hany both had in terms of goals and assists, and even Dan and Andy. And obviously, after reflecting with the team, with the coaches and myself, that is obviously something that I and Eddi as midfielders wanted to add to the team. For me, knowing we have two very aggressive center backs with Jeisson and Maxwell has kind of allowed Eddi and I to get up the pitch a little bit more. I’ve got quality players around me who are learning the ways of my movements, and I’m learning their movements. At the end of the day, I just think it’s about getting in the box as much as possible. I find myself more in the box this year, which is part of the system too. And yeah, happy to get two assists tonight, I guess.»

Patrick Yazbek, on a monumental night, pauses and looks up searching for the perfect pass.

For Minnesota United, Nectarios Triantis’ stunning goal was the only real bright spot on a difficult night. The visiting side never managed to impose their game against Nashville’s relentless intensity.

Nashville SC adds another home victory and remains unbeaten in the Eastern Conference. The focus now shifts to Wednesday, when Geodis Park will host Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in the Concacaf Champions Cup. For the 24,387 fans who witnessed a statement performance tonight, that appointment cannot come soon enough.
